Scholarship Frequently
Asked Questions

Who can apply for the scholarship?

If you’ve been part of our Heritage whānau for at least six months, have the right to stay in New Zealand, and show some leadership sparkle, this scholarship is for you!

What’s the deadline for applications?

The deadline for application submissions is 3 April 2024. Make sure you get your story to us by then!

What happens after I apply?

All complete and eligible applications will be reviewed by our scholarship committee.

The committee will develop a shortlist of applicants, and you can expect them to be in touch to let you know if you were successful for the 2024 Scholarship. Even if you aren't selected this time, you'll get support from your CHM and our skilled Learning and Development Team to create a personalised development plan, to set you on the right track towards your career aspirations!

For those that make the shortlist, you can expect to have a meeting with your manager, and the Learning and Development Team, to chat about your goals, the detail of your scholarship request and any support you think you might need to get there! You'll also learn about the training agreement, so you understand what it means and can ask questions.

The committee will regroup for a final applicant review to determine the successful applicant/s. Then its time to celebrate and communicate the scholarship outcome with everyone!

Can I get help with my application?

Who should I talk to if I think someone would be a good candidate for the scholarship?

We love that you’re thinking about others. Share your thoughts with your manager, and they can encourage potential candidates to take part in the application process.

Do I have to agree to my face and name being used for marketing purposes if I’m selected?

Yes, we want celebrate your success and share your inspiring journey. By applying, you agree to be a part of our success stories and allow us to use your name and face for marketing purposes. Plus, we will check in with you now and then to share updates on your educational and leadership journey.

What can I study?

It can be a bit daunting to know where to start your leadership journey, especially if you haven’t studied for a while. Here are some resources to help you work out what is right for you. You don’t have to choose from this list, it simply provides a flavour of the range of available options.

Start by thinking about your commitments. Would it be hard to commit to a specific time each week? Do you need something that fits around your work and family? Or would travel to your nearest education provider be a challenge? If so, an online option where you can work at your own pace might suit you best. The Open Polytechnic is one example of a provider whose courses are fully online. If there is a Polytech or other education provider near you, check out their list of courses.

Think about what you’d like to achieve. Can you set aside time each week to study and are you ready to sign up to a formal qualification? Some qualifications will have pre-requisites but don’t be daunted if you don’t have these because education providers will look at your experience. Here are some qualification suggestions:

-New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4)

-New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5) (Leadership and Management)

-Degree programmes such as Bachelor of Business (Management)

If you’re not ready to commit to a qualification, you may want to start with a short course covering leadership basics. There are a lot of courses aimed at people who are not yet in leadership positions – try searching for aspiring leader or emerging leader training courses. As an example, check out the New Zealand Institute of Management and Leadership (NZIM) website .

Whatever you choose, your course should be related to developing you as a leader or manager. It should also be offered by a recognised training provider.

If you would like to discuss your learning needs, please contact learning.development@hll.org.nz

What if the scholarship amount doesn’t cover the full cost of my chosen course?

This is something to consider before you embark on a course. Although you can re-apply for the scholarship the following year, there is no guarantee that you would be awarded additional funding.

The more information you can provide up front on the total financial commitment, the better.

What will happen in the conversation with my manager as part of the selection process? Is it an interview?

The aim of this conversation is to understand the support you would need to complete your chosen course or qualification.

For example, if you wanted to request a change to your roster, or you needed time off to attend exams, this would all be discussed so that your manager is aware. Ultimately, if you are successful in the process, we want to set you up for success.

What are the conditions of the Training Agreement?

We hope you will want to stay with Heritage and develop your leadership career with us.

The Training Agreement will set out terms and conditions that would apply if you left the organisation or failed to complete the course or qualification for which we provided funding. If you leave within a certain period you will have to pay back some or all of the funding and if you fail any component you would be expected to resit at your own expense.

What support can I expect if I am unsuccessful in this process?

If you are unsuccessful this time, a member of the L&D team will provide support to you and your manager to help you develop a personal development plan.

You can contact learning.development@hll.org.nz to set up a session.
